Bell Rated Among the Best
Bell Hospital in Ishpeming has been ranked in the 99th percentile nationally for physician service and the 98th percentile for overall patient care satisfaction by the largest hospital survey firm in the country.
Press Ganey Associates Inc., which weekly measures patient satisfaction at 1,780 hospitals nationwide, ranked Bell physicians among the top 1 percent of doctors in terms of patient satisfaction. Bell’s hospital services in general were ranked among the top two percent, under the “Overall Rating of Care Given” category. The ranking period covered the final quarter of 2008.
Press Ganey measures satisfaction in 49 general and specific categories. Bell ranked in at least the top 95th percentile in the vast majority of categories of service measured. The high percentile ranking was accumulated from weekly surveys conducted during the fourth quarter of 2008. All Bell inpatients are given the survey.
Bell President/CEO Rick Ament said, “We worked on specific service areas surveyed by Press Ganey for over a year prior to the September move into our new hospital facility. Our goal was not to just build a new facility, but to build an entirely new business culture, simultaneous to the new construction. We wanted our service to equal the quality of our new building prior to occupying it. The incredible effort that took place, from our physician staff to our cafeteria staff, prior to our move is reflected in over-the-top patient satisfaction rankings.”
Press Ganey measures patient satisfaction on a scale of one-to-five in 11 main categories nearly 40 subcategories. The areas covered vary from physician care, to quality of food, to staff courtesy, to waiting time for tests and treatments, to cleanliness of hospital room. Bell received scores ranging from 94-99 percent in all the 11 main categories of services provided.
Mr. Ament attributed the high patient satisfaction ratings to Bell’s Medical Staff and all Bell employees.
He said, “When viewed overall, it is clear that the survey’s central focus is on the people who deliver the healthcare services – at all levels. Bell’s mission of delivering excellent, compassionate care has been our primary strength for many years. Honing those attributes, by focusing on several specific areas of service, created an atmosphere of world class service at a state-of-the-art facility.”
